We manoeuvre devices that defy the limits of our imagination
International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory
The INL - International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory, is an intergovernmental organisation created to foster interdisciplinary research, development and implementation of nanotechnology and nanoscience. At INL there are about 40 nationalities, with employees from five continents.
Here, we often say that we go to space every day. We manoeuvre devices that defy the limits of our imagination. We work with materials that in unarmed sight would never be detected and we call them atoms and refer to them the ‘nanoscale’, which is 1 million times smaller than a millimetre.
We want to empower citizens with knowledge, we want to demystify what we do and break down the barriers that separate the researcher from the citizen. We want to show you that science can be fun. We want to inspire lifelong learners and science enthusiasts just like ourselves. We believe that the great scientists of tomorrow are sitting in the classrooms of today and sparking curiosity is our mission.

Our Projects
Currently, INL is also devoted in taking science to the general public. Would you like to find out more about us, our inspiring work and meet our Researchers? Join us at one of our many events and experience science up close! We look forward to meeting you!
European Researchers’ Night
European Researchers’ Nights are public events dedicated to bringing researchers closer to the public. We showcase the diversity of research and highlight the impact of research on our daily lives. The aim is also to motivate young people to embark on research careers. The events promote how researchers contribute to our society by displaying their work.
Visit INL
INL invites schools and universities interested in discovering our ‘Nanoworld’ through free-of-charge guided tours. The visit offers an introduction to INL, allowing visitors to discover the history of our Laboratory, its working areas and the latest scientific developments. The tour includes a presentation about the organisation, a short video film and a guided tour of some areas of our facilities, led by INL Researchers. Come and discover INL!
Mission NERD
Mission NERD (Nanotechnology Education and Research Demonstrations) is a scientific volunteer activity that explains the science behind the scenes of daily life. This Mission allows scientists to approach society and intrinsically bring to the front page that “we are all connected” providing, at the same time, an enthusiastic and learning activity in a whole new way!
OPEN DAYS
During our open days, INL invites the public to get in touch with science and enter into our ‘Nanoworld’, free of charge. We explain how nanotechnology works in our research areas and translate this knowledge to various people, from different backgrounds, educations and ages. This unique event takes place every two years and is powered by exhibitions, visits, presentations of artistic demonstrations, talks and experiments.
WELCOME to the ‘nanoworld’
Visit INL
Thank you for being so interested in visiting the INL. We value your willingness to encourage interest in topics related to Nanotechnology and Nanoscience to a generation as promising as the one you teach every day.
After an audit and internal analysis, we concluded that, because of the continuous increase in requests that reach us daily, at the moment, INL does not have the capacity and sufficient resources to continue to receive school visits in a way that students and teachers deserve.
However, one of INL’s objectives is to continue to bring science and researchers closer to the general public, which is why we have begun preparations for the 2024 OPEN DAY and the 2024 European Researchers' Night. We will disclose the program and more information about this initiative and its location in due time.
We invite your school to participate in this event. It will be an excellent opportunity for the entire school community to get closer to the world of Nanotechnology and to contact and get to know the researchers working at INL.
